:: Final Final ::

So here is my final. All the corrections have been taken into account. I tested this out on five different people and they all agree that this works better than my prior version of clicking text. Rolling over the arrows is less work for the user, and makes it nicer than having to click constantly. Its still up for change if need be. Enjoy.

:: Flash Final ::

Here is my final version of my Pop-up Book. I really wish that I could have had a little more time to add a few finer touches. For the most part, this is what I have done, and I hope very much that everyone enjoys it. Zippyvideos isn't working currently so please select the  'view large' to start the book.

:: Final Continued ::

My book is slowly coming along. The finessing will take place later, but for now this should give you a sense of how the book goes along. I am still planning to add soundeffects, along with making the rest of the tabs and hidden characters to be animated. The tabs will each have a glow to indicate that the user can pull them. The type still needs to be tweeked so that the changing of  the pages. The scroll bar can change, but for now this a starting point. The 'stickiness' of the tabs will be fixed so that your mouse doesn't get stuck to it. The easing will be corrected as well. For the most part, the background and book will stay the way they are. I might add some lighting to add to the book, but this works for now.

I edited the book as to the suggestions and comments of the other students. I think the mask works much better in the overall appearance. I am Still working on the last illustration, and clipping the rest of the images to begin making the piece interactive. Almost there.

:: FP Story Board and Narrative ::

Sample of the style. Type will be done in a very nice traditional Serif font to reflect the old style of children's story books.

Revision

Narrative for ‘Rotkaeppchen’

Page I : Introduction
“ a brief prose…..etc”
- Instructions on how to navigate the pop-up book

Page 2: Rotkaeppchen looking down on her offerings for Granny
Her internal dialog: “Hmmm, cake all buttery and rich with sugar and a chunk of cheese. What was mommy thinking, giving Granny a heart-attack? Like she needs that rich cheese?! Never mind, I’m in the will! And I have a naughty CD under the cake. Granny will like that the best – being all lonely in that cabin!”

Page 3: Little Rotkaeppchen meets the wolf in the forest and he standing upright with little effort. Rotkaeppchen wonders how that is possible. The wolf must have been eating the mushrooms like granny does or maybe he is just simply on crack!

The wolf: “Hey Rotkaeppchen, where are you heading? What you got cooking, precious, good looking? Lonely or something?”

Rotkaeppchen:” Ah –hmmm, LONE-ly! I bet you say that to all the girls in the forest? What do YOU want. I have no cigarettes and I ain’t got no change. Get out of my way, I’m off to my Granny’s house! MOVE, or I’ll kick you in the dingle-berries!”

The wolf: “Damn girrrl, you feisty thing. I don’t mean no harm – hey I got an idea. You oughta go thatta way and pick some flowers for your granny. You know, make some brownie points and them ole ladies really dig flowers!”

Rotkaeppchen: “Hmmm, what’s the catch? I bet you are lying!”
The wolf: “Hell no! Go see for yourself. Had I known I’d see a fine thing like you I’d got ya some!”

Rotkaeppchen: “Well I might stop by there, but don’t you try nothing funny you perv because I got pepper-spray, and I will mess you up!”

Rotkaeppchen skips off with her basket on a mission to score free flowers and the wolf licks his chops.

Page 4: Tipped off that an elderly lonely woman is expecting company, the wolf has hastened up to granny’s house and is stalking her now. He thinks to himself: ‘Damn that bitch must be sick or something, running her fire in the middle of summer. I hope I don’t catch nothing from that ole bag. That parvo last year almost knocked me off my ass. I wonder what the ole woman has in the fridge!’

Page 5: Rotkaeppchen has found a patch and is hastily putting together a tasteful bouquet. All the while she is looking over her shoulder, into the dark patches of forest. Her pepper-spray is at the ready for the foolish flasher, the peculiar perv or the wanton wolf. Oh this girl is ready and she is no fool.

Page 6: Rotkaeppchen has skipped her way all the way to Granny’s house, and all that flower-picking and dilly-dallying has barely set her back, time-wise and all. She knocks on the door ‘Boy, I wonder what Granny does with herself all day. What is that racket in there? Hmmm, I wonder if she is drinking again and fell out.’ Then she hears a crackling voice as though Granny (she was a wild one in her youth) had partied too much: “Hey Rotkaeppchen, I’m not feeling too well! Come in, the door is open!”

Page 7: Rotkaeppchen approaches the bed of Granny and is taken aback! Rotkaeppchen: ‘Note to self – live healthy! But WAIT, I know that face!’

Rotkaeppchen: “So Granny, what’s up with those huge bug-eyes of yours? Are you on crack or something? But wait, what is with that hairy face of yours? Doesn’t Medicare pay for electrolysis? OMG – and look at your teeth! Are those Halloween dentures or what is the deal?”

Page 8:
Rotkaeppchen (to herself): “You nasty canine! Now where is granny? HMMM. We all know a 140lbs timer wolf couldn’t possibly devour a sinewy senior citizen in one greedy feast!”

But although the wolf’s belly looks full, she feels she would get into trouble letting the woodcutter split open a perfectly good wolf. Besides the Department of Fish and Game might get really mad. Rotkaeppchen sees a lump on the other side of the bed, sure enough there is granny getting cozy with the wolf. granny pops up from under the covers. Granny looks like she didn’t take her meds, what is she playing hide-and-seek again?

In a hurry the wolf says to Rotkaeppchen? What's in the basket?

Page 9: The wolf, granny, and Rotkaeppchen feet are all hanging out of the foot of the bed. They all giggle.

In the last scene the user will scroll over the feet and watch the feet move and sounds of laughter will play on OnRelease. There might be other images like a dirty magazine, or box of dildos hiding that the user will pull out and discover with additional tabs.

:: Final Project Reflection ::

After much discussion, my peer helped point out some very valuable ideas when thinking about the execution of my project. First off, even if the target audience isn't children, the navigation needs to clear and concise.  In doing so, the illustrations will be clear and colorful in their aesthetic. Another important thing to think about is the way that the illustrations will pop up. This will determine the entire aesthetic of the book. Also, i will be incorporating sound effects when the user rolls over or on releases certain areas.

:: Final Project ::

I have always been interested in children’s books. I think the idea of making a piece of art that others can read or even physically take away is a powerful form of interactivity. I have chosen the story of ‘rotkappchen’ or ‘little red cap’ on her way to grandmother’s house. My final project will be a children’s interactive ‘pop-up’ book. The illustrations will be composed in a child-like or simplistic manner with additives of adult humor.

The reader will click on various symbols on the page to learn backgrounds and subplots. For example, clicking on an animal that says it claims to have raibies or mushrooms that promise to intoxicate. The images will be constructed as chapters, each individual chapter relaying the typical expectation of the story. The user will click on the ‘next’ button to see the next chapter. This sequence of images will guide ‘little red cap’ from her beginnings, to the final chapter which grandmother is delivered from the evil clutches of the wolf. The twist will be that the wolf is not killed in the end, but rather, domesticated or shipped off to the wildlife reserve.

:: Audio Project ::

:: Rhetoric Machine ::

• I remember when my parents would take my sister and I to the bowling alley as we were kids for a family outing. One of my favorite things there was this old juke box. I have always been fascinated with this machine. So I was thinking, of creating a machine that with its tone it will appeal to the cerebral part of the brain rather than the emotional. For this project I propose creating a similar idea with the juke box and having a series of speeches, if you will, given by different political figures that you can select and listen to the speeches. Much like a person would select a song for a dime, he or she would select a speech for a dime.

• Ways of modifying this can be optional.

• Perhaps, I will only have sound bytes of the speech?

• Maybe I will have a whole bunch of figures with byte clips?

• Should I just keep it to American Political figures?

• The foreign language speeches can typically NOT be understood however their tone and their response from the audience gives us clues.

• I plan on adding other figures but for now, some of the people I will use
are the following :

• General Patton
• Hitler
• George Bush
• Stalin
• Mao Tse Tung
• McCarthy
• Sarah Palin
• Jimmy Carter
• Ronald Raegan

:: Audio Review ::

After reviewing over some of the different sites, I really have to say that I was really into the soundscapes as a general category.  Mood Stream is very nice. The aesthetic was clean and a lot of fun to manipulate. The pin wheel allows you to change the style of the overall page. I really think it is interesting to see the many different moods you can arrange and select. When you select different moods the images that are displayed will change as well as the music. You can change the transition of the display of the photos. Another cool thing you can do is change the audio along with the images displayed too. If you want to get really technical you can actually arrange mood-boards to be exactly what you want. You can go to the archives folder of stream lists and upload certain images to your liking and arrange a setting for the types of moods you are wanting. I find this site to have a lot of interactivity and its quite genius to make mood station with images and video. It might be nice if you can  upload your own audio and images to document events and occasions.

:: Reaction ::

Reaction to Process

The process of creating a Video Installation to incorporate the user has been a challenging one. I found that it was very gratifying as well.  This has made me think a lot about what one can do to get the user involved. It doesn't just have to be done by flash. It can be done with anything. The idea that we came up with of having people in photos with their presidential candidate was not only for a fun interactive project, but also a means of educating the students and inspiring them to become aware and want to vote.

There are a few things that I would have done differently with the set-up. Had their been proper funding and time, it would have been nice to setup more than one area to photograph, just so we could have knocked more out in time. Also, It might have been interesting to see how to make videos of each technical shoot. and made a little interactive piece where people could walk in front of the green screen and had a projector showing them in the background of their choice. Im not sure exactly where I want to take this project next. Perhaps I will use some of the ideas in here to achieve an interactive piece for my final project. It's a lot to think about write now. The whole Installation has become a pretty powerful project. I never realized how well the response would be.

Overall, I think with some more development and planning I will be able to come up with a complimentary project in relation to the Presidential Candidate photoshoot. I can say that I will walk away with new thoughts and ways of incorporating users, how to motivate them and how to make them react to something. I plan on even using this form of interaction in my future illustration work.

:: Video Installation ::

2009-2010
MCA Presidential Candidate
Photo Shoot

Callicott Auditorium
11:30am - 1:00pm

All Students Welcome!

Summary of Proposal and Project:

In the group project of shooting people dressed as presidential and vice presidential candidates, a team of ‘us artists’ distributed various duties and tasks among ourselves. Vaan Waber was in charge of setting up the blogs for the two parties. Eric Huber was assigned to design our posters, which indicated when and where the event would take place. Santana Singleton went to various locations and gathered campaigning materials for students to take after their photo. She also allowed the use of camera to be used for the photo shoot. Jordan was in charge of making the masks for the members to hold during their shoots. Everyone participated in the initial set-up and break down of the Installation. The other members went and found or purchased costumes to add to the glamour of resembling the presidential and vice presidential candidates.  It became my duty to take charge of photography and lighting. It was determined as a group effort that individuals should be given options, which to choose from, of possible backgrounds for photo opportunities. I took the liberty to research and gather images of a collection of historical significance. I furthermore elected to pick a few more images such as an oilrig and gay pride. To increase the experience of those who chose to participate in this historic event I designed a special memento as a grateful token and memorabilia item, I created a memento which in essence is a thank you note listing website addresses where the images will be posted later on. The project was impromptu effort by us, a group of students to not only increase voter participation, but also to create a higher level of political awareness. We did this in a fun interactive way, which is certain to leave a lasting impression and find themselves memorialized under magnets of many a refrigerator door. The overall project was an instant success and everyone contributed in many ways.  All the hard-work and preparation of every members effort aided in the completion of a spectacular piece. The finished product will be presented on Tuesday.

So I decided to push my concept of paintings on a wall further. I added another scene to add some variety to my theme. I plan to include a couple more interiors to add to the diversity of the settings. Using masks I was able to make the aesthetic more to my liking. I still plan to take the compositions further and make them even more interactive. So far, this is a good stopping point for now.

:: Video Code ::

I wanted to incorporate the idea of making the video a painting on a wall. I would like to carry the version further and make still shots and from that point allow different options to make the paintings look like various styles. For now this is a work in progress and I kind of like where it is headed.

:: Revisions ::

So these are my corrections for all of my flash projects. However, I was having trouble with zippy-videos. It wouldn't allow me to upload my correct .swf files. The browser would just freeze and never refresh. Basically, I went back through each piece trying to utilize action-script and correcting 'glitches' that originally made the pieces not work.

:: Midterm Project ::

Full Screen

In this project I wanted to create events relating to the timeline and events relating to the user. This interaction is used by using a multiple of insects and using an object to smash them. You select the swatter and when the user releases the swatter is selected. When the swatter and one of the bugs touch each other or are in contact they do something. In this case, the bug reacts and plays a death clip. So when the collision is made the death appears in the form of a purple 'goo' splat. The animation techniques used are ranging from frame by frame animation, with the bugs animations within their movie-clips, Event handlers, Movie-clip Properties, Movie-clip timeline control, and forms of Action-scripting are used as well.

:: Action Scripting IV ::

In this experiment I decided to continue with using insects, of a different variety, and incorporate the drag and drop method by means of a Mason Jar capturing bugs. Using If Else statements, motion tweens, and other various components the piece overall is pretty successful. However, I was trying to create a bounding box, or barrier that wouldn't allow the, slight few bugs, to escape the jar. They are, presently, contained, but with a few modifications it could be better.

:: Action Scripting III ::

I decided, to continue my idea of bugs in nature. I ventured with using the fireflies. Plus, for kicks I integrated a lovely Bug Zapper to roast them. I think this has a lot more interest than my original idea.

Thursday, September 25, 2008

:: Action Scripting II ::

In this project, I tried to integrate the idea of nature and the habitat of bugs. Initially, you select one of the bugs and then enter a little nature 'game' room. Once in the room, you can move the leaves onto the flower, rub the stamen, and even move the other insects around. All of the commands of On-Press, On-Release, On-Release Outside, Rollover, Rollout, Drag-Over, and Drag-Out have been applied to this piece.

:: Quiz No. II ::

• Diff bx frame events and event handlers
The events respond to 2 primary events, events to the timeline and events related to the user. You can assign action to the timeline through a frame, the button, or a movie-clip. The event handlers are a way of executing events to a user. with On/Release, On-RollOver, OnPress, etc. Action-scripting itself is a process not an event.

:: Action Scripting ::

So, I was trying to involve the rotation, the x,y, and even the alpha coding, but for some reason I can't get the dragonfly to do anything. I was able to utilize the onPress and onRelease fine. I think I just need to work with it some more. I was trying to look up how the code was layed out for the different actions, but I kept running into trouble when placing the code on my Actions palette. I think I might be missing a semicolon, or i have too many spaces.

:: Revised Final Landscape ::

On this revision, I incorporated the other characters in the water with the crocodile. I removed selected areas of foilage that were mostly distracting the overall piece. The shape tweening in the intro was changed from the 'obscure plant' to a more abstract shape. The FPS were changed in areas as well. I made the intro a bit faster and then changed the easing of the crocodile, turtle and fish. I think this has a nicer and smoother transition. A mask was added in making the water rise so that it is no longer just free floating. I decided to keep the foreground water and just lightened it up a bit. I think the revisions make this piece much stronger.

:: Final Landscape ::

Seeing that flash has certain limitations without the support of action-scripts in an animation I decided to keep my design a little more basic. Having more elements individually animate caused a bit of an overload for my file. That said, I changed pieces of the foilage to be buttons within movie clips. As you roll over certain pieces they either expand, glow, or animate. This was a difficult choice but I think it plays out much better. I also included masks with shape tween elements to add a little pop and sizzle. There were other concepts and elements that I wish I could have added, but I think that will mostly be done better with the aid of action-scripting.

:: Assignment Write-up ::

For starters,
when creating my animation, I realized that most of my vector files containing strokes had way too many points. And when trying to animate in Flash, it caused the system to crash. Next, I converted all the files into (png-24) files and assembled the layers from there into flash. After converting the bitmaps to symbols. I began animating on the crocodile. I created the instance of having all his main joints moving with the rotation tool. Once I arranged the pieces to seem more realistic, I created a motion guide. Along the motion guide, I chose to ease in and out and rotated the crocodile to make it more interesting. From there I added an action-script to make the croc stop and hover. This is to later add interaction with him.
The other animation is with one of the shrub symbols. In symbol edit mode, I  transformed the size and eased in and out to make the shrub seem to physically breathe.

:: Quiz No. I ::

1. A symbol is on a main time line. When going into Symbol edit mode or 'double clicking' you can change the instance of that symbol. The instance is within a separate time line all by itself The Instance is within the symbol.

2. an empty frame is called an empty keyframe, which means nothing is drawn in. The other is called a keyframe, which is a holder of information

3. Scene animators work on frames in Flash, others might use flash for action-scripting for web design layouts. Some even use Flash for broadcasting design as well.

4. You can only motion tween a symbol. Not a Shape

5. A shape is different in that it can be broke apart and morph, basically it can tween from one shape to another unlike a symbol. A symbol can motion tween but not morph. In flash if you select a symbol you will see a blue stroke around it. If you select a shape you will see a layer of little squares covering the shape.

B. Make Something.

We as modern artists are faced with the same issues as the ancient classical masters, the landscape painters were. We can for example attempt to meticulously duplicate the natural world in a manner comparable to photography. We can, however, also interpret landscapes in a surrealistic manner or that of impressionism. We are thus altering and modifying reality in a still recognizable way, but inspire the imagination of the careful observer. He or she may be impressed by our choices of colors, patterns, and motions. This may or may not accomplish things nature is capable of doing. We can even go so far as to interchange characteristics of the natural world {ie having trees sway like a church choir}

For this assignment I chose a perspective within a natural world that would not exist naturally, but could be imagined to exist if, for example a tropical pool was sliced in half. It is not possible for an artist to get a visual of a world simultaneously below and above water without creating an imaginary slice straight through the middle. The slice does exist in the shape of a simple model in the shape of an aquarium By means of a simple piece of glass. The simultaneous observation of nature into media such as water and air is virtually impossible even to highly evolved creatures such as crocodiles who can only view one at a time. For that reason I find this particular chosen model of the natural world particularly fascinating. I experimented with ideas focusing more on the abstract realm but didn’t find it as interesting and exciting as creating a scenario imitating the natural world in much the same style as modern three dimensional animation. Even though it is two-dimensional it is highly suggestive of a three dimensional universe. Geometric shapes of imaginary ‘future-scapes’ are the most immediately gratifying subjects when working on this assignment. However, I find the fluent motions and organic curves of the natural world are a much more challenging frontier.

8/28 :: A History of Internet Art ::

Art Forum, by Rachel Greene
{A History of Internet Art}

This article covered a wide range of Internet Art through its conception and developments toward the future. I found some of the websites to be fun in interacting with. I did however have one point of misunderstanding which could develop to actually be my question. Is it normal to not be able to interact with certain sites? Is the target audience meant to be more intelligent? For instance, Shulgin's website had some interesting views, but I found it a bit difficult to interact with. There were lots of fun things in the site, but some were just absolutely pointless to me.
Also, Jodi.org was a bit complicated as well. http://404.jodi.org
It is lines of text or code that I didn't fully understand.

Another Question perhaps focuses on the idea of internet art with Museums. With the advancements of having Rubrics of New Media art, Museums started presenting online works with critical views. Have Museums diminished in exhibitions? {or} How have they been effected? negatively or positively in this change?

I found this website to be one of my favorites. It was designed with a very clean concept and I believe it to be easy to navigate through. The flash designs are especially fun to interact with. The intro has this preliminary type of interaction where you can draw with your mouse.
Continuing on.....The idea of actually integrating the gallery and perception of the viewer in order to see how others perceive art is incredible. In particular, there is one show that is called {The Virtual Window Interactive} by Anne Friedberg and designed by Erik Loyer. They have created a virtual space of how the 'world is framed and the importance of what is contained in the frame. Friedberg covers a timeline of how and what culture has visually seen over the course of 500 years.

8-26-08 :: Net Art Article + Q&A

:: Question for Discussion ::
It is interesting that net.art isn't given much spotlight for artists. Is it because there isn't a gallerist helping assist and promote the art, or that the common viewer is unaware that net.art exists? People that aren't as educated about art usually don't understand the importance or even the work that is put into a piece. Perhaps, it is that people don't care enough? There are many interpretations to this idea of what net.art is.

Question 1. Since digital media entered the field of art has the perception of art changed?

I would say that ,yes, the perception has changed because art has progressed to using other media and processes rather than merely painting on a canvas. Now, works are created through computer art and information art. There are forms such as, Digital paintings, vector graphics, audio and video recordings, combinations of of collages, lithographs all through software using a mouse or graphics tablet. Artwork can even be created with 3D graphics creating realistic 3 Dimensional shapes. Mainstream media produces lots of digital art in advertisments and even film uses digital media to produce special effects.

Question 2. A relevant section of digital art represents Internet based art. The Internet hardly existed, but artists conquered already this new field for their artistic activities. Can the work of these early artists be compared with those who work with advanced technologies nowadays? What changed until these days? What might be the perspectives for future developments?

Of course the work is comparable to the advanced technologies. The work that was done then is technically seen as outdated, but all work in design and art alike evolve and change with the coming of new advances. Even though we have new advances that doesn't mean that the work that early artists did is seen as unimportant because it is important. One must learn to crawl before one can walk. Before 'these days' art was more primitive in design graphics. The net art was limited. Now performance and motion graphics, flash designs allow more pull and play with digital media work. Possible advances for the future could be too overwhelming to imagine right now.

Question 3. The term "netart" is widely used for anything posted on the net; there are dozens of definitions that mostly are even contradictory. How do you define "netart" or if you like the description "Internet based art" better? Do you think "netart" is art, at all, if yes, what are the criteria? Are there any aesthetic criteria for an Internet based artwork?

Net-art can be described as any art that uses the internet as its medium or inspiration, but not necessarily its subject. I guess it would depend on interpretation of how you would see net art as art. Net art is meant to have forms of interaction with its viewers, and that can take place in several ways not just being able to see a video or clicking buttons that make graphics move. The criteria would be again up for interpretation. There are so many forms of digital art that there is no one right method.

Question 4. Dealing with this new, and interactive type of art demands an active viewer or user, and needs the audience much more and in different ways than any other art discipline before. How do you think would be good ways to stimulate the user to dive into this new world of art? What do you think represents an appropriate environment to present net based art to an audience, is it the context of the lonesome user sitting in front of his personal computer, is it any public context, or is it rather the context of art in general or media art in particular, or anything else.? If you would be in the position to create an environment for presenting this type of art in physical space, how would you do it?

Well, first off I would say in order for someone to 'dive' into the new world, one must be computer literate. That is to say one must need to begin learning and experimenting with using the internet and its means. There are lots of ways that this could be successful. For instance, galleries putting up work for net based art is a way for the audience to see work, another is the lonesome user, and even other forms of context. There isn't just one way that this should be done or presented, art is always changing and evolving and finding new ways of making it available is the key. It would depend on the matter in which the art is created.

Question 5.
As Internet based art, as well as other art forms using new technologies are (globally seen) still not widely accepted, yet, as serious art forms, what do you think could be an appropriate solution to change this situation?
I believe that the more a subject is studied the better understood it becomes. Net art is used all around us, but because it isn't fully accepted it is seen as unserious. Any art is to be taken in to consideration. Perhaps more exposure is the key, or maybe it's just time that is needed.
